Ok so this is something that is pretty odd that I have come across while chatting with other game developers. I found myself pretty shocked at the conversation and really couldn't understand it. However, it does leave me with a bit of concern for the future.
So what this conversation was about was Pewdiepie and what he felt about Youtube Red and why it happened. He spoke about how even though youtube has 1 billion users, youtube is still losing money and that is due to adblock. He polled his followers and got over 8,000 to respond and found 40% of them use software like adblock.
He explains how he is ok with them using adblock on his channel because he knows ads can suck, but he also mentions that these numbers are devastating for smaller channels.
He also said "Using Adblock doesn't mean you're clever and above the system, YouTube Red exists because using Adblock has actual consequences."
Now that is pretty much the gist of the articles.
The issue I have come across is many people actually think they deserve to not to have to watch ads. Someone in the conversation even mentioned how they hate that some ads are not skippable and all ads should be. He feels all ads should be mandatory skippable for those who simply do not want to watch them.
He also said since youtube allows adblock then that means there should be no problem.
Now coming from my point of view that sounds pretty entitled. Do you agree? What are your thoughts on it?
If youtube red does not work out as well as they hope, what will be their next course of action?
